Former Brewers midfielder Sean Clare picked up a yellow card for an accumulation of fouls on Baah and with a little bit of space to take on his man the Watford loanee curled in a teasing cross that appeared to clip a Wigan hand in the box, unseen by the match official. Powell forced a scrambling save from Tickle as the game moved past the hour mark and Albion searching for an equaliser. Clare inadvertently had a hand in Albion’s equaliser midway through the half clearing only as far as POWELL who lashed home an unstoppable 25-yarder. Albion turned to Bennett from the bench for the final eighteen minutes after a hard-working shift from Gordon on the right. Josh Gordon came into the side in place of Mason Bennett as the former Millwall man was eased back into action after his injury lay-off. Gordon slotted straight into the front three as Bennett dropped to the bench for the visit of the Latics. The Latics went close to an early lead, skipper Josh Magennis battling for, and winning, a long ball over the top and seeing his first shot blocked by Ryan Sweeney and the follow-up deflected wide at the expense of a corner which Albion frantically cleared – all within the first minute. Mark Helm went to ground in the box under a challenge from Omar Rekik in the twelfth minute but referee Sunny Singh Gill was not swayed to give the penalty. It was a sign that Albion were growing into the contest and Bez Lubala steered a header into the arms of goalkeeper Sam Tickle after good work from Tom Hamer on the right. Lubala then drilled a low effort agonisingly wide of the far post when Wigan carelessly surrendered possession inside their own half. Gordon was also getting his eye in with a rising drive that was not far over as half time neared. For all their attacking Albion found themselves behind on the stroke of half time when HUGHES fired home from the edge of the box through a crowd of bodies. HALF TIME: BURTON ALBION 0-1 WIGAN ATHLETIC Wigan made a change for the second half taking off Adeeko who was perilously close to a second yellow card at the end of the first half. Callum McManaman managed to escape in behind the Burton defence moments later but under pressure from Sam Hughes could only poke a shot across goal and wide of the far post. Kwadwo Baah draw a foul from Baba Adeeko near the touchline, earning the Latics man a yellow card in the process, but Wigan were able to clear Joe Powell’s free kick despite plenty of unseen shirt pulling inside the box on Sam Hughes. Albion were warming to their task and when Tickle spilled a low cross from Lubala the ball did not quite fall for Gordon although the striker certainly tested the Latics keeper moments later with a curling effort that needed tipping over the bar. Newcastle United turnaround under Eddie Howe continues with first Carabao Cup semifinal in 47 yearsNewcastle's new Saudi ties have left fans torn, but St. Burton Albion vs Wigan Athletic on 03 Oct 23 - Match CentreJOE Powell scored twice to seal a precious 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic and secure a first home league win of the season. Albion had to do it the hard way, coming from behind after Charlie Hughes had struck for the visitors moments before half time from a rare Wigan chance but Powell’s thunderbolt had Albion level midway through the second half before the turnaround was completed from the penalty spot after Kell Watts handled Powell’s cross to hand the midfielder the opportunity to lash home from twelve yards. Bez Lubala’s last dismissal for a second yellow card left Albion up against it for the closing minutes but Powell had done enough for the three points. POWELL was the man on the spot for the Brewers on 84 minutes when referee Gill took an age to decide that the Albion midfielder’s cross had struck the arm of Kell Watts and Albion’s scorer had his second of the night from the spot. Albion had to try and see out the game with ten when Lubala picked up a second yellow card for a clumsy foul. Baah was then sacrificed to enable Jake Caprice to come on and bolster the back line for the remainder of the game. Much as Wigan pushed there was no way through as Albion finally sealed that first home league win of the campaign. ALBION: Crocombe; Hamer, Hughes, Sweeney, Seddon; Helm, Powell, Oshilaja; Gordon (Bennett, 72), Lubala, Baah (Caprice, 90+2).
